College sport is a major enterprise in the United States with more than 400,000 student-athletes competing annually. It plays a significant role in American culture with the majority of households supporting one college team or another. In many cases, college sport enjoys larger television viewing figures and attendances than professional sports with television and retail income generated being in the tens of billions of dollars each year. In fact, of the top-10 largest sporting arenas in the world today, nine of them can be found on American college campuses. Becoming a scholarship athlete is the recognised pathway that American sportsmen and women must follow before entering a professional sports career.
